As a video game marketer, I am proud to say that I have successfully marketed multiple games through social media. I can also say that competition is fierce. To stand out in a rapidly growing industry, game developers and marketers need to come up with great strategies. Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube have revolutionised the marketing landscape by giving opportunities to communicate closely with their audience and help boost visibility for their games.
To start, I would like to share some of my insights and experience in how to leverage social media in video game marketing.
1. Know Your Target Audience
It is essential to know who your target audience is. You yourself are part of the audience, so knowing your own interests and preferences helps in creating content that can connect with them.
2. Optimise Your Social Media Profiles
Maximising visibility is crucial when it comes to representing your brand. Use high-quality game images, art, and logos as part of your social media profiles. Also make sure that your “About” section is well written and that it includes links to your website, blogs, and other relevant pages.
3. Engage Your Audience
It is important to engage your target audience in conversations, especially on social. Ask for their feedback and suggestions, which you can also incorporate into your strategy.
Having a great back-and-forth will show your audience that you care. Just be warned that it can be heated.

4. Use Visuals
Visuals are a key component when it comes to video games. It’s a great way to attract your target audience’s attention. Use screenshots, gameplay videos, and trailers to showcase your game’s features. Short videos and GIFs can also help pique their interest in your game.
5. Create Social Media Campaigns
A social media campaign is a marketing strategy you can incorporate to help your game immensely. Collaborating with popular gaming streamers and content creators and organising contests can incentivise the audience to participate and help create interest around your game.
6. Monitor Your Social Media Metrics
Keeping track of your social media metrics helps measure the effectiveness of your campaigns. Tracking your followers, click-through rates, and other data helps improve your social media strategy and your overall marketing campaign.
In short…
Social media is a powerful tool. Under utilising this would be a mistake, creating setbacks that could cost thousands. By knowing your target audience, optimising your social media profiles, engaging with your audience, using visuals, creating a social media campaign, and monitoring your social media metrics, you can maximise your game’s visibility and success.
